What Makes the Egret Ultralight 20° Stand Out?
Feathered Friends has long been a leader in high-performance sleeping bags, and the Egret Ultralight 20° is no exception. Designed specifically for women, this bag features extra room in the hip area, more insulation around the core and feet, and a slightly shorter length to help minimize dead space, making it warmer and more comfortable for smaller frames.
Here’s what I love most about it:
- 950+ fill power goose down means it packs down incredibly small but lofts like a dream.
- Rated to 20°F, it’s cozy enough for shoulder seasons and high-elevation trips. Because of the gender-specific sizing, that rating is true.
- Ultralight construction with a total weight around 1 lb 11 oz (depending on size).
- Water-resistant Pertex® Endurance shell provides protection against condensation and light moisture.
- Draft collar and zipper draft tube help trap heat where you need it most, and it's quite effective!
- Made in Seattle by one of the most respected names in outdoor gear.
My Experience Using the Egret
I’ve used the Egret Sleeping Bag during many frosty nights deep in the Weminuche Wilderness in spring, summer and autumn. It’s kept me super warm on the windiest nights, rainy weeks, and even a couple unexpected snow storms. I’m a cold sleeper, and this bag keeps me genuinely warm down to its 20° rating, which is epic. Usually sleeping bag ratings are a bit off.
The cut is just roomy enough to toss and turn but still efficient for retaining heat. I also appreciate that the hood cinches well and the zipper doesn’t snag easily; both underrated features that make a big difference when you’re cold and tired at 12,000 feet.
This sleeping bag compresses down really small, and lofts up nice and fluffy. Because it's capable of packing down tiny, I don't usually bother with using a compression bag for it.
Pros and Cons
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Extremely warm and efficient 950+ fill down | Pricey (but worth it for the quality) |
Women’s-specific fit with added insulation | Not ideal for summer-only use unless you're a cold sleeper |
Incredibly lightweight and compressible | Only available directly from Feathered Friends |
Excellent craftsmanship and materials |
Wrapping It Up
The Egret Ultralight 20° is an absolute gem for backpackers who need serious warmth in a lightweight, thoughtfully designed package. Whether you're sleeping under stars in a high cirque or hunkered down in your tent while snow flurries fly outside, this bag has your back and will keep you nice and toasty.
If you’re a cold sleeper, tackle shoulder-season trips, or just want to invest in a sleeping bag that’s going to last a decade or more, the Egret is a phenomenal choice.
