Outdoor Vitals Announces Special Projects, Starting With the Resolve Down Anorak

Outdoor Vitals is taking a new approach to specialized backcountry gear with the launch of Special Projects, a limited-production division created to develop highly specific pieces of equipment that might not otherwise have a place in the brand’s broader lineup!

The concept is intentionally different from the way most outdoor gear is developed. Rather than designing products around versatility and widespread appeal, Outdoor Vitals says Special Projects will focus on narrow-use equipment built to perform exceptionally well in specific, high-consequence scenarios.

The first piece to come out of the new division is the Resolve Down Anorak, launching this October.

And Outdoor Vitals isn’t positioning it as another ultralight puffy.

The Resolve has been designed around one particular problem: staying warm while sitting still for extended periods in below-freezing temperatures.

Introducing Outdoor Vitals Special Projects

Outdoor Vitals has built much of its reputation around lightweight and ultralight backpacking gear, where versatility and weight savings are often central to product design. Special Projects gives the company room to move outside those constraints.

According to Outdoor Vitals, the division exists to create specialized, limited-production pieces that are intentionally narrow in both scope and application. These products aren't necessarily meant to become the most versatile pieces in a backpacker's kit, nor are they being developed with mass-market production in mind.

Instead, Special Projects is intended to give Outdoor Vitals the freedom to build gear for situations where a more conventional product would require too much compromise.

In the company's words, the division exists to "build the gear that otherwise wouldn't exist."

That philosophy is particularly evident in its first release.

The Resolve Down Anorak Is Built for Extreme Stationary Cold

The Resolve Down Anorak has reportedly been in development for several years, beginning with a conversation about a surprisingly simple problem.

A contact of Outdoor Vitals asked the team when they were going to make a jacket containing 13 ounces of down. He needed insulation capable of keeping him warm for hours while stationary in sub-freezing conditions, but hadn't been able to find an existing option that adequately met those needs.

Outdoor Vitals recognized the problem from its team's own time in the backcountry and began developing a solution.

The resulting Resolve isn't designed like a conventional down jacket. Instead, Outdoor Vitals approached its construction more like a sleeping bag.

That's the central premise behind the piece: when someone is sitting motionless for hours in freezing temperatures, insulation needs are fundamentally different from those of someone actively hiking through the same conditions.

Outdoor Vitals says the Resolve is the warmest apparel piece it has ever made and openly acknowledges that it will provide more insulation than most people need on most trips. That excess is deliberate.

Limited Production Is Part of the Concept

Special Projects won't operate like a conventional Outdoor Vitals product line.

Because individual pieces will be developed around comparatively narrow applications, production runs will be limited. The company isn't designing these products with the expectation that they need to appeal to every hiker or backpacker—or remain permanently available as high-volume staples.

That opens up an interesting direction for Outdoor Vitals.

The outdoor industry often rewards versatility. Jackets, shelters, backpacks and other equipment generally need to work across enough conditions to justify large-scale manufacturing and earn a permanent place in a brand's lineup.

Special Projects effectively removes that requirement.

A product can instead be exceptionally good at one unusual job, even if only a relatively small group of outdoor users actually needs it.

The Resolve Down Anorak is the first test of that idea, but the larger story will be what Outdoor Vitals chooses to build next.
