My Experience Using It in the Sonoran Desert
This pack has become one of my favorite pieces for desert adventures, and long days out.
In the Sonoran Desert, gear needs are different. You often need to carry more water, camera equipment, emergency essentials, and sometimes extra insulation for early starts or summit wind in the sky islands. The Skyline 30 handles all of that without feeling cumbersome, or too small.
What impresses me most is how stable it feels while moving over insane terrain. Whether weaving through cactus country, climbing rocky ridgelines, or covering miles of rolling trail, the pack stays close to the body and moves with you.
That matters more than people realize. A pack that shifts constantly wastes energy. A pack that rides well becomes almost invisible. The Skyline 30 leans heavily into that second category.
Comfort & Fit
Outdoor Vitals did an excellent job with the harness design. The vest-style straps distribute weight nicely across the torso rather than concentrating everything on the shoulders. That makes long days noticeably more comfortable.
I also appreciate how accessible front storage can be. Quick access to snacks, phone, soft flasks, or small essentials is a game changer when you’re moving fast and don’t want to stop constantly. I like to keep a GoPro in one of the pockets, and some snacks in the other.
Breathability is also important in Arizona heat, and this pack performs well in warm conditions. It also sits higher than a more traditional backpack, which is great for venting out your back.

Thirty liters is a fantastic size. It’s enough for:
